Brilliant Fix
9 Sep
Remember these chairs?
They are still sitting in my garage…still blue…still with no seats…and still ugly.
My husband begs me to get rid of them. But I can’t. And I won’t.
Because they are original ladderbacks, baby.
I called around looking to have the seats re-rushed but at $175 a seat…not gonna happen.
Not unless I win the lottery.
So….browsing through Ms. Martha Stewart.com…this brilliant fix for chairs with missing seats flashed before my eyes.
That Martha did it again.
Brilliant idea…the perfect fix for my incredibly awesome chairs.
What do you think…yea or nay?

Carrie

This could not have come at a better time! I have a Chippendale-style chair that I found with a hole through the cane seat. I had researched all sorts of options, but this might be the best (and easiest) one yet!
I think so too!! Re-caning and rushing seats is expensive. This might be the best alternative all around! Let us know when your chairs are finished!
Eek – my first thought was “perfect” then I started wondering about the punches on the cylindrical sides. One option would be following the tutorial but maybe wrapping the webbing under?
Hey Allison! I think I should wrap the nylon too…I actually found some at Hobby Lobby that looks like burlap with a red stripe down the middle.
they look fabulous! I have just recently got an outdoor seat and this might be the fix for it.
Let us know!! Would love to see!!
Way better than caning! Totally go for it!
thanks Ashley! We shall see how they turn out!! LOL!! xoxo, Carrie
Those are great! Gave me a new idea for some chairs I’ve been wanting to redo! Thanks for sharing!
Hi! I just discovered your blog and wondered if you have tackled your chairs yet. I just got the exact same chairs, 6 of them for $1 each. Aside from being stored in a barn, having the finish completely worn off, and the wood and rush seats completely dry, they are all intact. I am unsure of whether or not I will be able to restore the rush seats, though, as they are very dried out and filthy! I love the idea of using the jute webbing you mentioned in a woven pattern on the seats. I have seen it used on other projects, and it looks amazing. I have purchased a good bit of it for an ottoman project. Not too bad, either, when you use the 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby.
Thanks Shelly! I have yet to finish my chairs too…my husband wants to toss the chairs, and I won’t let him! Send me some pictures if you finish your chairs before I do! -Carrie
I am wondering what kind of tack gun you are using? where did you get it? I love the idea and want to try it myself but need a gun like that.
Rhonda, unless I’m mistaken, I don’t think it’s a tack gun but rather a staple gun, which is much better for strength. If she only used the tacks, they would pop out in no time. Tacks are mostly for looks. I love the tacks and weaving material. Not crazy about the yellow, but that’s just me. I think it was worth it to wait for the right way to do your chairs! Nice nice!
This is awesome! Love it!
This is an awesome idea and going to do this myself cant wait to try this
Thank you.
Love this…what kind of gun is that? Looks very handy!!!
